Kalaries

Kalaries, traditional training spaces in Kerala, are integral to the practice and teaching of various classical performing arts. Derived from the word “kalari,” which means battlefield, these studios are designed to cultivate discipline, physical prowess, and artistic skills. Students practice intricate dance movements, facial expressions, and mudras (hand gestures). Training is rigorous and includes both practical and theoretical lessons. Kalaries maintain a serene and disciplined atmosphere conducive to intense focus and dedication. The environment is meant to inspire respect for the art form and the teacher (guru). More than just training grounds, Kalaries are repositories of cultural heritage, preserving ancient traditions and techniques and passing them down through generations.
